- In Guyana, Jim Jones leads his Peoples Temple cult in a mass murder-suicide that claims 918 lives in all

- A collision near Yangzhuang railway station in China kills 106 and injurs 218.
- The Spanish Constitution is approved in a referendum, officially ending 40 years of military dictatorship.
