Setting the scene for 1979:
- 50 people are killed when a French tanker explodes at the Gulf Oil terminal at Bantry in Ireland;
- The Shah of Iran flees Iran with his family and settles in Egypt;
- Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returns to Tehran, Iran after nearly 15 years of exile and seizes power;
- The People's Republic of China invades northern Vietnam, starting the Sino-Vietnamese War;
- It snows in the Sahara Desert for 30 minutes;
- Spacecraft Voyager I passes Jupiter and discovers rings around the planet;
- US President Jimmy Carter in attacked by a swamp rabbit while fishing;
- Egypt and Israel sign a peace treaty at the White House in Washington;
- The very first Space Shuttle, Columbia, is delivered to NASA;
- In Chicago, a DC-10 crashes during takeoff, killing 271 on board and two people on the ground;
- Bryan Allen flies the man-powered Gossamer Albatross across the English Channel;
- Carter and Brezhnev sign the SALT II agreement in Vienna;
- Spacestation Skylab returns to earth, mostly burning up on re-entry;
- A fire at a hotel in Saragossa, Spain leaves 72 dead;
- Lord Mountbatten and 4 others are assassinated by the Provisional IRA;
- Pioneer 11 passes within 21,000 km of Saturn, the first spacecraft to visit the planet;
- Two families flee from East Germany by balloon;
- 3,000 Iranian radicals, mostly students, invade the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and take 90 hostages (53 of whom are American);
- an Air New Zealand DC-10 crashes on Antarctica on a sightseeing trip, killing all 257 people on board;
- First Star Trek movie premiers at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC;
- The Soviet Union invades Afghanistan;
- The first European Ariane rocket is launched;
