• January 8 – Kegworth Air Disaster: A British Midland Boeing 737 crashes on approach to East Midlands Airport, leaving 47 dead.
• February 15 – Soviet war in Afghanistan: The Soviet Union announces that all of its troops have left Afghanistan.
• February 16 – Pan Am flight 103: Investigators announce that the cause of the crash was a bomb hidden inside a radio-cassette player.
• February 24 - Ayatollah Khomeini places a US $3-million bounty on the head of The Satanic Verses author Salman Rushdie.
• March 2 – Twelve European Community nations agree to ban the production of all chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) by the end of the     March 9 – A strike forces financially troubled Eastern Air Lines into bankruptcy.

• February 13–February 28 – The 1988 Winter Olympics are held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
• March 16 - The Halabja poison gas attack is carried out by Iraqi government forces.
• March 17 - A Colombian Boeing 727 jetliner, Avianca Flight 410, crashes into the side of the mountains near the Venezuelan border, killing 143.
• April 28 – Aloha Flight 243 loses several yards of its upper fuselage while in flight, killing 1 person.
• May 4 – PEPCON disaster in Henderson, Nevada: A major explosion at an industrial solid-fuel rocket plant causes damage extending up to 10 miles (16 km) away, including Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport.
• May 15 – Soviet war in Afghanistan: After more than 8 years of fighting, the Red Army begins withdrawing from Afghanistan.
• May 27 – Microsoft releases Windows 2.1

Setting the scene for 1987

• February 11– British Airways is privatised and listed on the London Stock Exchange.
• February 23 – Supernova 1987A, the first "naked-eye" supernova since 1604, is observed.
• March 6 – Zeebrugge Disaster: A cross-channel ferry capsizes outside the harbor off Zeebrugge, Belgium; 180 drown.
• March 9 – The Irish rock band U2 releases their studio album The Joshua Tree.
• March 24 – The Walt Disney Company signs the agreement to construct the 4,800 acres (19 km2) Euro Disney Resort.
• April 13 – Portugal and the People's Republic of China sign an agreement in which Macau will be returned to China in 1999.
• April 19 – The Simpsons cartoon first appears as a series of shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show.
