INPUT 1984

Setting the scene for 1984:

  • The first Apple Macintosh goes on sale.
  • Space Shuttle Challenger makes the first shuttle landing at the Kennedy Space Center
  • Virgin Atlantic Airways makes its inaugural flight.
  • France beats Spain 2-0 to win the Euro 84.
  • Salyut 7 cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya becomes the first woman to perform a space walk.
  • The 1984 Summer Olympics are held in Los Angeles, California.
  • The African republic Upper Volta changes its name to Burkina Faso.
  • Hezbollah car bombs the U.S. embassy annex in Beirut, killing 22 people.
  • Aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger, astronaut Kathryn D. Sullivan becomes the first American woman to perform a space walk.
  • Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is assassinated by her 2 Sikh security guards .

INPUT 1983

Setting the scene for 1983:

  • Release of the Apple Lisa personal computer by Apple Inc.
  • Björn Borg retires from tennis after winning 5 consecutive Wimbledon championships.
  • Lotus 1-2-3 is released for IBM-PC-compatible computers.
  • IBM releases the IBM PC XT.
  • The Transmitter Ismaning, the last wooden radio tower in Germany, is demolished.
  • President Reagan launches a proposal to intercept missiles, also known as 'Star Wars'
  • Michael Jackson 'moonwalks' for the first time in public.
  • Space Shuttle Challenger astronauts Story Musgrave and Donald H.

INPUT 1982

Setting the scene for 1982:

  • Shortly after takeoff, Air Florida Flight 90 crashes into Washington, D.C.'s 14th Street Bridge and falls into the Potomac River, killing 78.
  • London-based Laker Airways collapses, leaving 6,000 stranded passengers and debts of $270 million.
  • Japan Airlines Flight 350 crashes in Tokyo Bay due to thrust reversal on approach to Tokyo International Airport, killing 24 people among the 174 people on board.
  • The oil platform Ocean Ranger sinks during a storm off the coast of Newfoundland, killing all 84 rig workers aboard.
  • Argentina invades the Falkland Islands.
  • The nuclear submarine HMS Conqueror sinks the Argentine cruiser General Belgrano killing 323 sailors.
  • The Weather Channel (United States) airs
